Special Events and Activities

OCCOA offers special events and activities throughout the year and all over Otsego County - from the “Young at Heart” exercise program at the Power House Gym, to computer lessons at the Alten Zimmer Center, to “Tuesdays at the Movies” at the local cinema. We sponsor monthly dances, potlucks, pizza parties and regular ice cream socials.

During the summer, older adults can take a monthly fishing trip to the Otsego Lake State Park, ride in the Alpenfest Parade, or take in a Tiger baseball game. Beautiful nearby Aspen Park provides a peaceful setting for our weekly walking program, and the community garden allows those with green thumbs to grow their own vegetables. Older adults in Otsego County have come to look forward to such annual events as the Christmas Bazaar, Mother/Daughter Banquet, Irish Party, Garage Sale, and Talent Show.

Educational Breakfasts are offered every other month at the University Center in Gaylord, and feature presentations by experts on such topics as chronic disease, losses of aging, vision/eye care, loneliness, spirituality and safety in the home. The goal of the Breakfast Series is to help older adults improve independence and make healthy and informed decisions. Blood pressure and foot care clinics are also available at the senior center in Gaylord, and a variety of games and fellowship are offered at the senior centers in Elmira, Gaylord, Johannesburg and Vanderbilt.

No matter what your interest or need, OCCOA has something for everyone!

“When we give ourselves something to look forward to, no matter how great or small the event, we are giving ourselves the gift of hope. And where there’s hope built into tomorrow, there are all kinds of possibilities for overcoming whatever obstacle we face today.”
