Date Time Event Description Location Instructors Duration 3/08/12 3/21/12 10 a.m. to Genealogy Presentation Learn the latest on researching your Computer Lab Jackie Skinner Monthly Club
Are Computer Club members required to pay membership fees? No. The OCCOA funds the Computer Club, and provides a paid coordinator, the use of the agency's facilities and computer equipment, as well as class materials. How often does the Computer Club meet? The club schedules monthly meetings, as well as periodic 1-to-5 week classes. How big are the classes? Most classes are small in size (up to five students) and offered in an informal and relaxed atmosphere that allows plenty of time for questions and answers as material is presented. As needs of the club members necessitate, larger classes may occasionally be offered at offsite locations. Who teaches the computer classes? The club utilizes the TAP2 (Technologies and Aging Project 2) Peer Tutor Model, meaning that the classes that are offered to club members will be taught by their peers (age 55 or older). Being older adults, themselves, these volunteers are aware of the challenges that their peers encounter in learning about and working with computer technology. Their experience in learning the technology and materials, themselves, makes them an excellent resource and source of encouragement and support to their students - after all, "they've "been there"!
Are volunteer opportunities available? Yes! The club is always in need of volunteers who can help expand the OCCOA Computer Club's instructor/tutor base. There is a specfic need for older adult volunteers (age 55 or older) who have solid computer skills and feel comfortable teaching in a classroom setting. Volunteers should enjoy working with older adults, have patience, compassion, and good listening skills. To be considered for a volunteer position, please complete a Volunteer Registration packet and submit it to the OCCOA Volunteer Coordinator as instructed.
